As a rugby coach I believe that performance analysis is an integral part of the pre-match preparation and post-match review processes within all rugby. Supporting players with objective information designed to provide insights into the true nature of performance, analysis is a key tool in the continual search for on-field advantage.

As is common in a number of other sports, video analysis is a key aspect of analysis in rugby and has been embraced by players and coaches at the very top of the game. In a recent interview with The Score, George Murray, Performance Analyst at Munster, claimed that in his experience the best players are those who are willing to engage with video analysis and use it to inform their on-field decision-making.

Rugby analysis is predominantly focused on live feedback and working with players on an individual basis. With in-game analysis helping teams to identify trends and react instantaneously, performance data now influences strategy more than ever before.

Analysis Evolution

Of course, rugby analysis has evolved dramatically since its early days and today features a wide range of different tools designed to leave no element of the coaching process untouched without the support of objective data. It transformed the way coaches evaluate their players and monitor both the technical and physical condition of athletes at an exceptional level of detail.

Video analysis enables the creation of bespoke training schedules for individual players and improves injury prevention and treatment, this physiological monitoring technology are integral to the coaching and management of players in rugby. Providing coaches with a 360-degree picture of their players’ fitness levels, skills and decision making qualities.
